Themes & Variations was founded in 1977, to meet the demand for professional symphonic performances and recordings of music primarily composed for motion pictures from 1933 to the present day. All of the works in the rental library were faithfully restored from the original orchestral sketches and/or orchestrations.

Some of the composers whose works are represented in the catalog are Sir Malcolm Arnold, John Addison, John Barry, Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, Elmer Bernstein, Bruce Broughton, Ernest Gold, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, James Horner, Maurice Jarre, Henry Mancini, Basil Poledouris, David Rose, Nino Rota, Miklos Rozsa, Max Steiner, Dimitri Tiomkin, Franz Waxman, Roy Webb and Victor Young.
Themes & Variations is a consultant to Decca, Intrada, Koch, Kritzerland, Nonesuch, Philips Classics, RCA, Silva Screen, Sony, Tadlow, Telarc and Varese Sarabande in the preparation of recording projects as well as representing music from Paramount Pictures for the symphonic and concert market. Among the frequently programed compositions from the library are The Godfather, Star Trek, Psycho, Vertigo and The Untouchables.
The tremendous popularity of Academy Award nominated scores Hugo by Howard Shore and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by Alexandre Desplat as well as Philip Glass’ The Hours are among the most popular rentals from the largest representative of music from movies and television.

Recent restorations include The Bridges of Toko-Ri by Lyn Murray and Sleepy Hollow by Danny Elfman.
Spider-Man, Goldfinger, Da Vinci Code, Bram Stoker’s Dracula and The Mask of Zorro and Big Fish are among the many film scores represented by Themes & Variations from the Columbia Pictures/SONY library.
The Addams Family Concert Overture from the 2010 Broadway Musical by Andrew Lippa has been a popular hit as well as The Beatles Guide to the Orchestra arranged by Sam Hyken.
Since 1992 Themes and Variations has been a consultant to PGM Productions in the preparation of orchestral concerts performed live with film which include many of the greatest classic motion pictures of all time.
